Robert Bruce Newman
With an early interest in mind-body medicine, RBN graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1958 and then studied privately with teachers for years. He created Gain Ground, a new kind of art exhibition space in New York City in 1967. In 1970 he began what turned out to be more than 30 years of training with Tibetan meditation teachers and doctors. In 1991, with Dr. Ted Wolff of NYU Medical Center, he founded MediGrace, Inc, a nonprofit organization dedicated to extend the use of meditation science in medicine and childbirth.
Now located in Ashland, Oregon, he has presented more than 80 training seminars in West Coast hospitals since 1997. In 1998 he initiated a program in prenatal meditation, Calm Birth, which has been training teachers internationally since 2012. Calm Birth was presented at the University of Michigan Medical School in 2007.
His book Calm Birth / New Method for Conscious Childbirth was published by North Atlantic Books in 2005. In 2006 North Atlantic Books published Calm Healing; Methods for a New Era of Medicine.
In 2016 Random House released the advanced edition of Calm Birth; Prenatal Meditation for Conscious Childbirth. He has taught at the University of Colorado, Naropa University, and the City University of New York.
